What is a saas model?

In this article we will talk about SaaS technology, about which you may have heard more than once if you face the need to buy certain software. There are many terms in the internet world that are not always understandable to the average user, so here we decide to discover the essence of this concept in the simplest way possible.

The SaaS (Software as a Service) model is a system to sell a software product, in which user access is provided through the Internet. That is, instead of buying and installing software on your computer locally, the service is available through the global network or, as they say, from the cloud.

The user of the SaaS system obtains access to the application, as if renting it, paying a certain amount for a period of time. Because of this, such a solution is cost effective. But its main advantage is that the user does not need to deal with the technical aspect of the problem: installation, support, update, compatibility and other problems, that is, he can only use the functionality necessary for his commercial purposes.

SaaS system features

We list the main SaaS parameters, which distinguish it from the standard software:

  • It is not necessary to buy a license to use the product: instead, your rent is paid for a certain time. This can be a monthly payment or payment for the amount of data. In this service (support and system update) are already included in the price.
  • A service can be used simultaneously by several clients. They can access it from different operating systems and browsers remotely from wherever there is an Internet connection.
  • If the user is not satisfied with something, or the need to use it no longer exists, simply stop paying for the service.

The services based on the SaaS model in our time are many, and everyone has a client. However, along with all its advantages, they have certain disadvantages. That is what we will discuss next.

SaaS benefits

  • It is not necessary to install software on each computer; This is the main advantage of the model, as mentioned above.
  • Reduction of the financial costs of buying a software product and its subsequent support.
  •  From the developer’s point of view, this model makes it possible to address the problem of piracy, since the final program does not fall into the user’s hands completely.
  • Such systems, as a rule, are cross-platform and between browsers, that is, they do not require a technically specific operating system or browser to work with the application.
  • The use of SaaS allows you not to link an employee to a workplace or computer: access to the application can be done from anywhere with Internet access

Disadvantages of SaaS

  • Your business data when using the SaaS system will be transferred to an external provider, which is not always safe.
  • low internet speed can affect system performance
  • Due to interruptions in Internet access, downtime occurs at work, which is very unreliable from the employer’s point of view.

However, all these problems are already disappearing, since modern technologies allow stable and fast access to the Internet, and data encryption technologies allow a fairly reliable exchange of commercial information over the Internet. That is why SaaS systems are becoming more common.

In recent years the amount of such services continues to grow due to their relevance and ease of use. But progress does not stop there, nowadays companies are trying harder to offer more and more perfect and interesting ideas, taking into account the needs of each one.
